Sweeney Todd (Horror/Thriller)
The opening titles start with the Production Lines names which are Dreamworks and Warner Brothers Pictures. These are shown slowly and and fade in and out. Dreamworks is shown looking through thick grey clouds and then it zooms out to show the whole production name. It then fade out and shows the next production name (Warner Bros.) and this is shown over a grey and eerie sky. This suggests to the audience that the film is a horror/thriller because the sky is dark not light and happy. These titles are shown with a loud organ playing as background music which increases the intensity of the start of the film and suggests that it is a dark movie.
Following after these titles is, the production line names again but as usual tiles. The font of these are slightly crooked, old fashioned and 'gothic', and they fade in and out at a medium speed and the colour of the font is white so it stands out from the dark sky. After this, in the same font, 'A Parkes / MacDonald production' comes up which again, fades in and out at the same speed as the last titles. Another production name follows using the same transition and font, this is, 'A Zanuck Company Production'. Each of these titles have about a 12 seconds difference to the next title shown and this is continued until the cast names appear.
Before the cast names, the last thing to show is that it is 'A Tim Burton Film'. This shows the audience the maker of the film which could make an impression of some of the audience if they already know Tim Burtons previous styles of films.
After the film maker/director title has faded in and out, 2 seconds after the cast names appear which are, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman. These cast names are in the same font as the production and film maker titles but the transition of fading in and out is at a much quicker speed, but long enough for the audience to read. It is at this point, when the few cast names appear, when the film title appears by falling down from the top of the screen, similar to the way the blood was falling down the chair and onto the cogs. It says, 'Sweeney Todd' in the similar font which is a deep red; again like the blood seen before and then 'The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' follows after and fades in underneath in white in a capital letter font. It stays on the screen for around 4 seconds until it fades out to the loud organ music.
A few more cast names appear after the Film Title and then is followed by the person who casted all of the cast, the music and lyrics producer, who the film/musical is based on and who the songs are originally sung by. Some of the audience could recognise these names which could make them realise what type of film Sweeney Todd is. More names are shown of who orchestrated the music, supervised and connected, and who produced the music (Mike Higham).
Co-Producer, Katterli Frauenfelder, fades in after the music crew which is followed by the costume designer, the editor, the production designer and the director of photography, all of the creative crew. These titles are all using the same fade in, fade out transition and the same 'gothic' font.
The producer names follow, from executive producer (Patrick McCormick), who the film was produced by and screenplay (John Logan). Some of these names are familiar, like John Logan, (who has written screenplay for popular films like, Hugo and Skyfall). This suggest that some similar screenplay techniques could be shown in Sweeney Todd like other films John Logan has worked on.
The final title is the director, Tim Burton. I think that this is one of the most important titles as it shows the audience who has directed the film and could make the audience think what the film will be about as a lot of Tim Burton's films are quite dark.
